Thank you for taking the time to write and to acknowledge the efforts of the Department to maintain a degree of normality for the majority of the services. There are a number of factors which have influenced where we currently find ourselves. Crews have obviously had to adapt to the way we collect (physical distancing in the workplace), less traffic will certainly have contributed positively, and of course less people being on the streets generally means less litter and areas that have been cleaned tend to last a little bit longer before their next clean is required.
We have seen less general waste collected from April into May but this does tend to fluctuate quite dramatically under normal circumstances anyway. Volumes of mixed recycling have increased as you can probably imagine given people are consuming more at home. Since we reintroduced glass collections we have been collecting significant volumes which is understandable given the service being suspended but equally I believe alcohol sales have increased by around 30% so I think increased tonnage of glass will endure for a few weeks yet.
We’ve obviously worked hard to get garden waste collections reinstated as quickly as we felt possible. In the first week of collections we collected around 1000 tonnes which compares to 3000 tonnes in total for all of May ’19.
The service was suspended for 5 weeks which means some customers missed two uplifts and others missed three. We will extend the permit ‘season’ to compensate customers for the service suspension.

Service suspended from 24 March – If you have large items please keep them at home and only use communal and wheelie bins for your day to day waste and recycling.
Any uplifts booked in for this week will be collected as scheduled, and we’ll contact you if you have any booked in for next week to arrange a refund.
Household Waste Recycling Centres
Recycling centres are closed from 24 March until further notice. This is to ensure we are following government guidance on restricting non-essential travel and contact. If you have large items please keep them at home until our recycling centres reopen and only use communal and wheelie bins for your day to day waste and recycling
Kerbside glass collections (blue box)
Service suspended from 23 March to allow our crews to focus on other collections.
There are no public health risks associated with storing clean glass containers. Please rinse bottles and jars and store these at home. Don’t use on street or local recycling points to dispose of your glass. We don’t have the staff resources to empty these or collect fly-tipped material.
Bin delivery and repair
Bin deliveries are suspended as from 24 March. Uplifts of any unwanted waste containers are also suspended.
We might experience disruption to some of our bin collections today due to staff shortages. Remember to check ourdelays information to see if your area may have been affected.
Please ensure all waste/recycling containers are presented for collection for 6am as there may be changes to your collection time. Please look out for your neighbours and check they are able to put their bins out.

A concept testing for the communal bin review project has been implemented in Albert Street to test the project aims:
Increase and improve recycling services to residents in multi-occupancy and flatted properties providing fully integrated waste and recycling service (each location aiming to have residual waste, recycling, food waste and glass)
Review the existing bin locations to develop more formalised collection hubs to improve the perception of the service and enhance the streetscape
Improve overall recycling performance, customer satisfaction and service reliability
