Trams updates: bins; construction-work ceasing soon

(copied from emails from CEC and the trams team)

Bins

Just a quick update to let you know that the bin relocations necessary during the upcoming roadworks (and along the detour route) are going to schedule; we’ve already positioned the new, wheeled bins and will be removing the large, side-loading bins next week.  Most of the new bins are next to the existing bins to make life easier for residents, as the old bins are removed we will reposition the new ones slightly to minimise obstruction wherever possible.

We’ve already started running the night shift route to get the crews used to the new route.  If they identify any potential over/under-provision due to the increased collection frequency, we will adjust where necessary.  A couple of the existing paper bins (blue lids) will be replaced with packaging bins (green lids) to improve recycling opportunities for residents.

We will continue to monitor the locations to see if any need to be adjusted.

Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions or concerns.

Kind regards,

Peter Jones, Project Officer, Waste and Cleansing Services, The City of Edinburgh Council,

Construction work ceasing soon (temporarily)

Formal instruction has been issued to Sacyr, Farrans Neopul (SFN) and Morrison Utility Services (MUS) to shut down the Trams to Newhaven construction site. This is in accordance with advice given by the Scottish Government over the last 48 hours.

The complexity of this project means that it will take a few days to action and there may be works that need to be completed in order to make the site safe and secure. Any further work that is undertaken will be done in accordance with Scottish Government guidelines around proximity working. Current traffic management arrangements will remain in place.

Work will continue off-site, again operating to strict social distancing guidelines, including design, planning and scheduling, as well as drawing up a remobilisation strategy for returning to the site once restrictions are lifted. We will also be closely liaising with MUS and SFN to look at ways of mitigating the impact of work stopping on the wider project.

The project contact centre will continue to be operational for any queries.

Leith Central are meeting virtually!

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, we are hosting a virtual meeting from 7pm on Monday 30th March.

Residents are welcome to join in using Zoom with the link zoom.us/j/323515008

It will follow the agenda initially outlined for the meeting on 16th March which can be read on our meeting page, including our response to the City Mobility Plan and new proposed developments at Iona Street.

Residents and community councillors are encouraged to follow the chair and keep microphones muted unless selected.

Special thanks to Community Cllr. Amy Woodgate for facilitating this new solution.

Coronavirus and Leith Central

There’s not much we can add to government advice and rulings, but we want to reiterate;

  1. Stay at home. Protect the NHS.
  2. Wash your hands.
  3. Ensure your news is from a trusted source.

Leith, Bonnington, Broughton and Hillside are very densely built up areas which means we need to take particular care and heed the advice. If you’re confused about the fast moving rules, please check out either of these definitive websites (and only them!);

We applaud the dozens of community groups popping up in the area in response to COVID-19, from street-wide WhatsApps to larger community networks. Several of our members have been active in facilitating these groups, but to ensure the safety of everyone, as well as the magnitude of them now springing up (mostly on “street by street level”, we’re no longer catalouging them.

Volunteer Edinburgh are now starting a larger directory of them. Here are some national organisations that may be of help;

Nationwide support (phone and online)

  • 0800 111 4000 is a national helpline to provide essential assistance to those who don’t have a network of support but who are at high risk of contracting COVID-19. Those with health problems are re-directed to phone NHS 111 (dial 111) or the NHS Inform website. More information is on the Scottish Government Website.
  • 0800 028 2816 was the original helpline. It remains live for general advice and guidance on COVID-19. It is non-clinical.
  • GP practices remain available during usual hours (primarily for non-Covid-19 health matters).
  • Emergency services are unchanged on 999.

ReadyScotland (by the Scottish Government) have also released a directory of support numbers

Helping communities affected by COVID-19

(from the Scottish Government website)

An additional £350 million will go to those most affected by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The funding will be made available to councils, charities, businesses and community groups and designed to be flexible, cutting down on red tape to enable them to respond swiftly and according to local need for people impacted economically or through reduced contact with society, including anyone struggling to access food.
