City Plan 2030 newsletter

Hello and welcome to the first newsletter from the City Plan 2030 team.

In this issue: What is City Plan 2030?, Engaging with children & young People, An update on recent community workshops and A look ahead to the choices for City Plan 2030.

  1. What is City Plan 2030?

City Plan 2030 will be Edinburgh’s next local development plan. It will set out a strategy to guide Edinburgh’s growth and the policies which we use to guide new development. The City Plan 2030 project was launched in September 2018, via our Development Plan Scheme. The Development Plan Scheme explains how City Plan 2030 will be prepared, a timetable and further information on how you can get involved. You can download the Development Plan Scheme from our website.

  1. Engaging children & young people

As we start to prepare City Plan 2030, we have been visiting secondary schools across Edinburgh, coinciding with the 2018 Year of Young People. We have been asking young people about what they think about their area, and what issues are facing the city.  You can see the findings from the workshops on our blog and we will be using their thoughts as we start to prepare the plan. 

  1. An update on recent community workshops

We have put together a short video on how we have been engaging local communities to date. You can view the video on our blog.  If you have any ideas for future engagement, get in touch with the City Plan Team. We are holding an additional community workshop on Monday 3 December at Currie Library from 6pm – 7.30pm, registration and light refreshments from 5.45pm.

  1. A look ahead to the choices for City Plan 2030

The main consultation for City Plan 2030 is due to take place over 8 weeks in February and March 2019. The consultation will set out the main choices that we need to make as we prepare the next plan and we are keen for people to get involved. You can keep up to date with the project by:

Trams to Newhaven update

The following update was issued this morning by ‘Trams to Newhaven Project Team’ (email newhaven.tram@edinburgh.gov.uk)

Leith Central Community Council is pleased to note that the Tram Design 2 Consultation has been extended to 11 November, following requests made by CCTT, the coalition of community councils along the proposed tram route. We urge everyone who lives on or within 1/2 mile of Leith Walk to respond to the consultation.

We also welcome that the final decision to go ahead has been put back to March next year (originally: 13 December 2018). This will allow for much-needed time to sort out the many detailed questions that remain, most importantly the detailed arrangements during the 2 year construction period. LCCC is also still looking for answers to the other big question: how is our area going to benefit environmentally after tram construction?

Update – 23 October 2018

Councillors will make the decision on whether or not to proceed with the Trams to Newhaven project in March 2019.

Tenders for the project were received in early September and evaluations are ongoing.

The final stage in this process is to seek best and final offers from the bidders which will then be used to complete the Final Business Case for consideration by elected members.

It is important for the Council to have sufficient time to undertake due diligence and comprehensive evaluation of the final submissions and the Council has therefore decided to take extra time to allow this process to take place.

The Council has undertaken extensive consultation with residents and businesses in Leith and Newhaven to inform the final design of the proposed route and has proposed a £2.4m Support for Business package during the construction period.

You can view the Trams to Newhaven project designs and plans, which have been updated thanks to public feedback from consultation earlier in the summer, until Sunday 11 November on the Council’s Consultation Hub.
