The 5th annual £eith Decides participatory budgeting event is nearly here. Don’t miss your chance to help allocate over £22,000! There are 37 projects asking for your support. Full details are on the Neighbourhood Partnership web page.

Applications are still needed to provide a good choice of projects for the people of Leith. Making an application gives the opportunity to get a grant of up to £1,000 for a Leith project. But it does more than that. Applicant groups and organisations become part of the £eith decides publicity which promotes the groups and organisations involved. Posters are displayed in libraries as well as information going out on the Neighbourhood Partnership website and social media. However, The Leith Event in February attracts hundreds of local people, providing valuable networking opportunities and enables participating applicants to recruit new participants, members or volunteers.
The decision is made on the day of the event (7 February) for projects to be completed by 31 August. So good timing for any Spring and/or Summer 2015 events or projects. Projects who have been made awards in the past have benefitted children, young people, older people, families as well as people vulnerable for a number of reasons. There have been a wide range of projects involving the arts, such as music, drama, dance and painting; the environment such as gardening and clean up campaigns; fun activities such as imaginative play, camping, sailing and day trips; skills training for young people and jobseekers; support for people with physical disabilities or mental health issues, and more.

The Leith Neighbourhood Partnership is now gathering information for its Local Community Plan for the next three years. This plan sets out what we will focus on achieving from 2014 – 2017. We want our actions and priorities to reflect Leithers’ views. The Leith community, including the people who live, work, volunteer and study here are best placed to know what Leith needs. This survey is the first step in finding out what local people want. Click here to give your views online (open until 31 March 2014). Paper copies are available in McDonald Road Library and Leith Library, or by contacting Loraine Duckworth. Survey results will be shared on the Neighbourhood Partnership website by the end of April.
A Community Conference will be held on 16 May 2014 at 2.00 pm in the South Leith Parish Church Halls, Henderson Street to discuss the survey results and other available information about the local area and its needs. The conference will help to start developing the Local Community Plan 2014 – 17 and set out how we can keep working together to make Leith an even better place. This event will be open to all who wish to attend.
The Leith Neighbourhood Partnership covers two council ward areas of Leith and Leith Walk. These wards are recognised for their high density, variety of activities, and diverse populations. How much do we understand about Leith and Leithers? A public meeting is being held at 7.00 pm on Thursday, 3 April 2014 Bun-sgoil Taobh na Pairce (Parkside Primary School) Bonnington. A presentation will be given on information from the 2011 Census. Everyone welcome.
A new financial year from 7 April 2014 brings with it a budget of £44,184. £22,092 to be allocated through the Leith Funding Panel in grants of up to £3,000 and £22,092 allocated through the next £eith decides programme. The Funding Panel meet on 9 April 2014, therefore any community grants applications submitted with all supporting documents by 28 March 2014 will be considered at that time. Thank you to everyone who participated in our fourth successful £eith decides. 1,035 Leithers allocated £22,885 to 26 local projects, choosing from a wonderful range of 43 projects.
Leith Time Bank is an exciting new idea that gives people the opportunity to share time and skills to develop their community. Time banking is a way for people to exchange their skills and time. For every hour members ‘deposit’ by doing something for someone, they are able to ‘withdraw’ equivalent support in time. In this way a new structure is provided for neighbourliness, creating a sense of community. Do you rent your home from The City of Edinburgh Council? Not much time left to have your say in the survey Your Rent, Your Priorities, which asks tenants what is most important to them and what their rent should be spent on. The consultation will run until March 2014.
