6 Priorities set to make Leith safer

Recently people attending the fourth public meeting of the Feeling Safe Community Forum came up with 6 priorities to make Leith a safer place.

The priorities, as selected by members of the Leith community are;

  • Leith Links area – Address anti social behaviour caused by persons drinking alcohol.
  • All Leith Primary schools – Run a safe parking initiative at drop off & pick up times.
  • Kirkgate area – Address anti social behaviour caused by persons drinking alcohol.
  • Leith Walk – Address anti social & intimidating behaviour by beggars.
  • All Leith & Leith Walk area – Run a Halloween bonfire & firework initiative to address unsafe practices & anti social behaviour.
  • Leith Walk –  Run a road traffic initiative to address speeding motorists and cyclists on pavements.

Local Police & Council Officers will now act upon these six priorities over the next three months.  An update to the Community Councils will be provided monthly as work progresses.

The Leith Funding Panel have £5,813 to allocate at their next meeting on 18 November 2013.  This money can be used to make improvement to the local area and to encourage community activity.   The box below gives more detail of the kind of thing that this money can be used for:

 3. What kind of things will the Neighbourhood Partnership Community Grants Fund pay for?

Applications for locally targeted, one-off activities aimed at improving and encouraging community activity in the area are encouraged.  The kinds of things that the fund will support could include:

  • Start up grants for new groups
  • Buying a piece of equipment for your group (grants up to £1,000)
  • Improving or developing your community group’s activities
  • Raising awareness of your group’s activities
  • Recruiting new volunteers/members to your group
  • Finding out about needs in your community
  • Small scale projects that enhance quality of life and complement other improvements in the area
  • Supporting projects which progress the aims of the Neighbourhood Plan

Some examples of projects which could be funded include: consulting the local community on their priorities for improving facilities in the partnership area, providing activities for young people to encourage them to move away from being involved in anti-social behaviour and community events.

If you are not sure whether your project is eligible please come to the next Community Council meeting on the 23rd of September to discuss it or give Loraine Duckworth a call on 0131 529 6194 or  07739188437.

Public Meeting: Moving Around Leith Forum Tonight 7pm

Pothole

The Moving Around Leith Forum:

If you know of some pavement in dire need of repair, potholes in your street or just have some ideas on  how Leithers might get around their neighbourhood better, your presence at the the Moving Around Leith Forum tonight 7pm at MacDonald Road Library would be much appreciated.  The Moving Around Leith Forum gives an opportunity for people in Leith to voice opinions on what they consider to be important roads and transport issues in the area.  The idea of the forum is to gather views from local residents and businesses and they hope to see as many local people there as possible

This is a useful event if you want to talk directly to council officers who want to take your opinion into account before deciding what improvements in the road networks are necessary.

NB. tonight’s meeting will NOT be about Leith Walk as the re-development of that much-dug-up through route is being monitored by a sub-committee of  the LCCC.

Constitution St

By the way, the above photograph shows Constitution Street, the only street in Leith and I suspect one of a few in the country with its own blog, http://constitutionstreet.wordpress.com/.  Please  take a look at it.
