Survey of events in parks

This year’s survey about events held in parks across the city in 2018-19 has been published today: https://consultationhub.edinburgh.gov.uk/sfc/copy-of-copy-of-parks-events-review-2018-19.

This surveyfocuses on views and comments on a range of events which took place between October 2018 to September 2019. Events include the Beltane and Samhuinn Fire Festivals on Calton Hill, the Summer Sessions and the Virgin Festival Fireworks in West Princes Street Gardens, the Circus and Colour Bomb Carnival in Sighthill Park and many more.

Housing 2040: Scot Gov exhibition / consultation

The Scottish Government & Architecture Design Scotland are coming to Edinburgh on  11th and 12th December. They say

Home is more than simply shelter. It is not just the place where we live, but has a huge influence on how we live. It can shape our health and wellbeing, as well as our work and prosperity. It also impacts on the quality of our environment and the strength of our communities. Housing touches every part of life in Scotland, from childhood to old age.

We’re here to explore the future, working to understand what our homes and communities should look and feel like in 2040. The exhibition looks at themes around living and housing, offering the opportunity for discovery and discussion – gathering and sharing views about our housing needs and aspirations.

By listening to voices from across the country and across generations, we’re building a picture of a housing system that can evolve and adapt to the challenges that tomorrow brings, from an ageing population to the climate emergency.

The Scottish Government has begun to consider how our homes and communities should look and feel in 2040 and the options and choices to achieve this.

The travelling exhibition is curated and designed by Edinburgh University’s School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA), award-winning Scottish practice Collective Architecture and Peak15 Design, together with Chris Leslie and Sandy Halliday. Accompanying the exhibition are facilitated workshop sessions, designed to hear from a range of voices.

The views collected through the consultation and the travelling exhibition will help to inform the Scottish Government’s final vision and route map for housing over the next 20 years, which it is aiming to publish in spring 2020.

The exhibition and consultation will be at Castlebrae Community High School from 6pm – 8pm.

Consultation on Phase 1 of the roll-out of Controlled Parking Zones into LCCC areas

Edinburgh Council is consulting on parking in LCCC’s area. The consultation is at https://pclconsult.co.uk/edinburghcpz.

LCCC encourages local residents and businesses to check their ‘local patches’, then respond to the consultation. It closes on Sunday 10th November 2019.

Bus Lane Operational Hours – Stakeholder Workshop Invitation

You may have heard of the City of Edinburgh Council’s public consultation on amending bus lane operational hours. Most bus lanes are currently closed to general traffic from Monday to Friday peak hours only (7.30am to 9.30am and 4pm to 6.30pm). To speed up bus journeys, we are considering changing the times they are closed to general traffic to 7am till 7pm seven days a week.

The consultation provides an opportunity for us to hear from and discuss the proposals with people and organisations potentially affected. Feedback from the consultation process will help to inform our decision.

In addition to an online consultation survey which will go live on the 31st October, we are inviting stakeholders to attend a workshop to hear about the proposals in further detail and to enable stakeholders to provide specific input on the proposals.

Please RSVP by emailing BusLane.HoursConsultation@edinburgh.gov.uk letting us know if you are able to attend by 18th November 2019. We ask that only up to two people from a single organisation attend and that you advise who you are representing when you RSVP.

If you are a representative organisation with members, we would be grateful if you could circulate this email to your members or colleagues that may be impacted by the proposals.

1 Introduction to the event

Duncan Bremner (DB) of Citizen Curator introduced the event.

Harald Tobermann (HT), vicechair of Leith Central Community Council (LCCC), introduced LCCC’s role in this event. He noted that the event is about the Local Development Plan (LDP), called CityPlan 2030, that is currently in development. The event would also touch on other relevant legislation, such as the Community Empowerment Act, including Asset Transfer. (This enables local communities to request to run publicly-owned assets.)

DB noted that Edinburgh Council (CEC) is due to put CityPlan 2030 out to public consultation towards the end of 2019. Then the final version is due to be published in 2022, and would be in place until 2032. This LDP is the document that developers refer to when planning developments. It also informs many other CEC services and activities, especially land-use.

DB noted that the Scottish Government (SG) has recently passed a Planning Act. Now some secondary legislation is needed to complete it. However, this act enables community organisations to develop local place plans (LPPs), and obliges local authorities to ‘have regard’ to LPPs. This legislation is so far untested.

DB also noted that the Scottish Land Commission is considering land-use, and how communities should be involved in such discussions. Continue reading →
