£100,000 Litter & Flytipping Community Action Fund – applications invited

(adapted from an email from Zero Waste Scotland)

Zero Waste Scotland has launched a new £100,000 fund, which Keep Scotland Beautiful is administering, to enable community groups to apply for funding to help them tackle the litter and flytipping in their own neighbourhoods.

The proposed objectives of the Fund are to:

  • support community-led activity to tackle litter and flytipping and increase recycling on the go in Scotland;
  • promote and encourage increased community ownership of local environmental quality issues;
  • impact on current litter and flytipping levels within communities,  raise awareness and stimulate public behavioural change; and
  • promote partnership working between local communities, local authorities and other agencies.

Examples of the types of projects that will be considered are:

  • community clean-ups and prevention initiatives;
  • localised awareness raising and behaviour change campaigns to reduce some of Scotland’s most commonly littered and flytipped items;
  • adopt-a-street projects;
  • creating deterrents to litter and flytipping;
  • raising awareness of penalties.

You can view more about the Fund and how to apply online here

The closing date for applications is 19 September 2014.

MELA 2014

(taken from a post on Leith Links CC’s blog)

The 20th annual Edinburgh Mela runs from 29 – 31 August 2014, and we’ve put together our most exciting programme yet to celebrate. Fancy dancing to the ragga-tipped beats of legends like Apache Indian or GAUDI, journeying around the world in eighty tunes with blissfulQawaali, fast-paced Ghanian drumming or Chinese punk, falling in love with some beautiful choreography at the Mela World Dance Feste, trying out new spices in the Global Food Village, meeting animals from all over the globe at the Kidzone Animela, marvelling at the vibrant fabrics of the famous Mela Fashion Show, or being transported to fairyland by our brand new orchestral commission The King of Ghosts? Well, you’re in the right place: come on down to Leith Links, and join the party.

Clearance day at Pilrig Park

FW Balfours Botany Sat 23 August 1030 12pm

Balfour’s Botany: Making Pilrig Park more Wild!

Over the summer months artist Andrea Geile and horticulturalist Rebecca Govier have been working with local groups to investigate the legacy of Edinburgh botanist John Hutton Balfour (1808-1884). Known by some as ‘Woody Fiber’ his enthusiasm for botanical exploration was not just for the discovery of new species, but in understanding ‘their place in vegetation’. Inspired by ‘Woody’, Balfour’s Botany combines both his passion for teaching and the desire to understand a plants ‘place’, bringing this dynamism once more to Pilrig Park.

Clearance Day – at the ‘wee’ play park Saturday 23 August, 10.30 – 12pm in Pilrig Park

Supported by the Friends of Pilrig Park the aim of the clearance day is to prepare the area behind the small play park for native planting, which will take place in September.  There will also be litter kits available to help pick up the rubbish that has accumulated over the summer months.
