Gretna Train Crash – Centenary Commemoration, Saturday 23 May
(based on a flyer posted on Tower Wharf Residents’ Association’s website – thank you!)
At 6:49 on 22 May 1915 a troop-train carrying 498 members of the 1st/7th (Leith) Battalion, The Royal Scots, en route to Liverpool to embark for Gallipoli crashed into a local train parked on the wrong line, at Quintinshill, just north of Gretna. A minute later a Glasgow-bound express ploughed into the wreckage. 216 men from the Battalion died and a further 220 were injured in the crash and ensuing fire. Nearly all came from Leith, Musselburgh and Portbello. It is still by far the worst accident for casualties in the history of railways in briatin. Most of those who died were buried in a communal grave in Rosebank Cemetery, Pilrig Street, where a memorial Cross and Plaques commemorate all 216 who died. Continue reading

Full details can be found at http://www.edinburgh.gov.uk/download/meetings/id/46716/item_76_-_police_scotland_service_level_agreement_2015-16.
Please see below the cut for the key parts of this document.

Public toilet closures: which would **you** close?
(with thanks to Leith Links CC for alerting us to this issue. The text below is adapted from a page on Edinburgh Council’s consultation hub.)
Edinburgh Council has taken a step back from implementing a £600,000 reduction for the Public Conveniences budget, which would have resulted in the closure of 22 public toilets across the city.
However, a budget decision was taken in 2011 to remove £300,000 from the service budget within the 2015/2016 financial year. This means that around 10 public toilets will still need to be closed. You can tell Edinburgh Council what you think by answering a survey. (Please note the survey opens on Monday 13 April.)
