North Edinburgh Path network: resurfacing and drainage works

(adapted from an email from Edinburgh Council. While these works may not directly affect Leith Central’s area, they may affect people who cycle to and from the area.)

Balfour Beatty has been appointed by The City of Edinburgh Council to carry out a package of footpath resurfacing and drainage improvement works across the North Edinburgh Path network commencing 7th March 2018 for a period of 12 weeks.  These works are spread across 55 locations on the paths highlighted in the location plan. (Click the graphic to download the full-size PDF.)

The initial phases of works will commence on Blackhall, Trinity and Hawthornvale paths.  All works areas will be signed a week in advance on site with diversion routes notified.  The works on the Blackhall Path will commence first on 7th March and will last for approximately 3 Weeks until 23rd March 2018.

The working hours will be between 0730hrs and 1730hrs Monday to Friday. There is no planned weekend working.

Potential path closures

Due to the nature of the works and to ensure the safety of both path users and workers it will be necessary to implement traffic management within the working hours mentioned above, which will include footpath closures. Diversion routes will be available for all path users and local pedestrian access to properties will be granted.  We appreciate these paths are important for people walking and cycling in and through the area therefore our intended approach to managing access during the works is:

  1. Local diversions around work activities (may require dismounting and walking on verges)
A sample of the diversions is here. (Click the graphic to download the full-size PDF.)
  2. Path closures – with diversion routes taken between accessible ramp accesses.  Please see attached sample diversion map.
  3. Information boards will be displayed at closure points with maps of the diversion routes for onward journeys.  Please note that some diversion routes may require cycling on trafficked roads and dismounting for crossings.

These works are essential as part of the on-going maintenance programme and we apologise in advance for any inconvenience that these works may cause. Please contact John McCormack with any queries.  Alternatively, if you wish to discuss these works with a Council Officer please contact Bryan Mackie, Professional Officer, or 0131 469 5678.
