Leith Programme Stakeholder Update 67

(Please note that this statement was  circulated by Alan Dean, CEC Partnership Development Officer (Stakeholder Liaison and Engagement) on 23 January 2015 at 16:01

Weekend Work Update

The contractors will be working on Sunday 25 January in order to carry out some carriageway work in the section between and including the Stead’s Place and Jane Street junctions. This was originally planned to have taken place on Sunday 11 January but had to be rescheduled as a result of the poor weather conditions at the time.

The Next Phase of the Leith Programme

Following on from the recent works on the Pilrig Street to Crown Place section of Leith Walk, the next phase of the Leith Programme works, the upgrading of the Foot of the Walk junction, has a planned start date of Monday 9 February. This phase will involve:

  • Resurfacing the road and pavements
  • Redesigning the crossing to make it more pedestrian friendly
  • Improvements to the area adjacent to the Newkirkgate shopping centre
  • Improvements to pedestrian islands on Great Junction Street
  • Alterations to bus stops and loading facilities at the Foot of Leith Walk

The work will commence on the section between Crown Place and the Foot of the Walk before moving on to the junction itself. The planned completion date is early summer 2015. It is anticipated that this will be around the end of May/early June. The contractors for this section are MacLay Civil Engineering Ltd. As in all earlier sections, while some disruption will be inevitable, every effort will be made to keep this to a minimum by careful traffic management and maintaining access to residential and business properties.

Works Update

Crummock (Scotland) Ltd commenced with the remaining contracted works in the Pilrig Street to Crown Place section of Leith Walk on 6 January. In tandem with this, they are also carrying out any remedial work as required. Weather conditions permitting, it is anticipated that all carriageway surfacing work will be completed by the end of next week with all work, including remedials, completed by the end of January. The current weather conditions are hindering the progress of specific elements of the job such as the installation of the road markings, for example, but every effort is being made to get this completed this as soon as possible.

Weekend Work:

The contractors will be working on Sunday 11 January in order to carry out work at the Stead’s Place and Jane Street junctions.

Leith Economic Framework: consultation

(adapted from an email from Edinburgh Council’s head of economic development)

Edinburgh Council is consulting on the draft Leith Economic Framework. This will last 8 weeks, then a finalised version will go to Edinburgh Council’s Economy Committee on 28 April 2015. Edinburgh Council will then develop the “Priority Areas for Council Action” into an action plan with allocated responsibilities and timescales, to fit with the timetable for the overall operational plan for the Economic Development Service.

Alongside exploration of alternative options, Edinburgh Council will continue to examine options for the Leith Docks area as a hub for renewables manufacturing.

Please see papers on Edinburgh Council’s website – and let LCCC know what you think. We welcome input by post (28 Pilrig Street, Edinburgh EH6 5AJ), email and Twitter.
